Fluoride Treatment

Fluoride treatment is a quick and simple process administered by our dentists to help prevent tooth decay and keep your children’s teeth for life

Fluoride is natural mineral found in the food and water we consume which helps strengthen and protect tooth enamel, making the tooth more resistant to acid wear and attacks from plaque and sugars.

When plaque and sugar attack the enamel of your child’s teeth this can cause demineralization, as tooth enamel contains mineral crystals. This causes the tooth’s surface enamel to weaken, allowing bacteria to erode your child’s teeth, causing cavities and dental caries.

However, minerals such as fluoride, phosphate and calcium from the food and water we consume and the toothpaste we use can help strengthen the enamel which helps to reverse the effects of demineralization. Naturally, this process is called remineralization, and fluoride is one of the most effective methods for speeding up this process.

Fluoride treatments are offered to children and even adults to help reduce the risk of developing cavities. To learn more please continue reading below:

How can fluoride treatment protect your teeth?

At Family Dental Excellence, our caring and compassionate dentists can help protect and strengthen you or your child’s teeth through the use of our professional fluoride treatment. We recommend this treatment for the following reasons:

  • Help prevent tooth decay
  • Deep pits and fissures on the chewing surfaces of teeth
  • Exposed and sensitive root surfaces
  • Poor oral hygiene habits
  • Frequent sugar and carbohydrate intake
  • Inadequate saliva flow due to medical conditions or medications
  • Recent history of dental decay

Remember to follow a consistent oral hygiene routine

Fluoride treatment alone will not prevent tooth decay. It is important to teach your child about the importance of maintaining a regular oral care routine which includes brushing at least twice a day, floss at least once a day, reducing sugary snacks and visiting the dentist for their active maintenance appointment generally every six months. During your child’s fluoride treatment, our team will go that extra mile to help educate your child in a fun and engaging manner about the importance of caring for their precious teeth, and the reasons why oral care is so important to their overall oral health.
